This Week's News: Google Updates Indexing Rules for Shared Pages

Google updated spam guidance for pages with shared or user-generated content. What small business owners should check in Search Console.

Google updated its spam guidance to clarify which pages should stay out of search results. If your website or any service you use lets people create shared or user-generated pages, this concerns you too.

1. Google clarifies which pages should not be indexed

On October 26, 2026, Google updated its “Prevent user-generated spam” help page updated Google help page. A new section was added: “Only index content meant for Search.” Google directly addresses services with “tools that let users publish shared pages, generated content, or web apps” shared pages and generated content. Such services are advised to block these pages from search crawlers: using a noindex tag (via meta robots or the X-Robots-Tag header) or by blocking crawling in robots.txt noindex rule or robots.txt block.

Google also flags an important detail: blocking a page in robots.txt alone does not guarantee it disappears from search results. If an external link points to that page, Google’s crawler may still find and list it by the link, but it will never actually crawl inside the page and see the noindex rule — because robots.txt blocked crawling itself robots.txt blocks the URL, so the crawler never sees the noindex rule.

What this means for your business: if you use platforms with shared documents, forms, website builders, review pages, or other services where content is created by users, some of these pages may disappear from Google search or never appear there at all. If such pages used to bring you visitors from search, your traffic from those pages may drop. On the other hand, if your site previously had junk or technical pages getting indexed by mistake, there should now be fewer of them — which is generally good for your site’s standing with Google.

What to check: Verify ownership of your website or subdomain in Google Search Console — without this, you won’t receive alerts about manual actions or security issues. Open the Page Indexing report and look for any sudden jump or drop in the number of published public pages — a sharp change can signal a problem. Ask your contractor or the platform you use whether pages with shared access and user-generated content are blocked from indexing, and exactly how — with a noindex tag or through robots.txt.

Summary

This Google update concerns websites and services with pages that allow shared access or user-generated content. Check your site ownership in Search Console, review the Page Indexing report, and ask your contractor how indexing is set up for such pages. This directly affects how many of your business pages customers can actually find in Google search.
