Google Ads or SEO: Pros and Cons for a Business Owner

How Google ads differ from SEO: what you pay for, how long to wait, what happens if you stop, and how to measure each channel yourself.

“Which is better: Google Ads or SEO?” Business owners ask us this on almost every first call. “It depends” satisfies nobody, so let’s break it down. These are two different tools: one works while you pay, the other takes a long time to build. They don’t replace each other. They answer different questions: “what do I need this month” and “what do I want to have in a year”.

First, the limits of this text. Google’s help pages give no fresh, honest figures like “ads are so many times cheaper than SEO”, so we give none either. Below is what Google itself says (we checked its documentation on 18 October 2026), what practitioners say, and what we see in our own work. Where these differ, we say so.

1. What you pay for

Ads. You pay when a person clicks your ad. In your account you set the highest amount you are willing to pay for one click. According to Google’s help, a maximum CPC bid is “the highest amount that you’re willing to pay for a click on your ad”, and what is actually charged is usually lower. In the report you can see the actual price in the “Avg. CPC” column.

SEO. SEO (search engine optimisation, meaning work that helps people find your site in Google’s ordinary, free results) costs nothing per click. Google takes no money for a place in search results: its documentation says plainly that it “never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results”. But a free place does not mean free work. You pay for texts, site structure and loading speed, and that money goes to people, not to Google.

2. Ads don’t lift your site in the free results

A common mistake: “I pay for ads, so my site has also gone up in search.” No. According to Google, advertising with Google won’t have any effect on your site’s presence in its search results. These are two independent channels: paid ads sit separately, free results separately.

Practitioners who tested this also found no pattern of “we pay for ads: free results grow” or, the opposite, “ads hurt them”. So don’t ask your ads contractor to “also lift the free results while at it”: that is different work on a different thing.

3. How long to wait

Ads start as soon as Google has approved them, and the first impressions and clicks can appear within the first days. SEO is different, and here the sources disagree.

  • What Google says. Every change takes some time to be reflected: some can take effect in a few hours, others could take several months. In general, Google advises, wait a few weeks before assessing whether your work had a beneficial effect. Google gives no separate figure for “how many months until the site reaches the top”: its guide says plainly that there are no secrets that will automatically rank your site first.
  • What practitioners say. Agencies name longer periods, and they differ from one another: the first noticeable effect after roughly 3 to 6 months, payback after roughly 6 to 12. For a new brand, some say, even longer. These are not official figures but the experience of people who sell SEO, and it depends on niche, competition and the age of the site.

Our conclusion is simple. If you need customers this month, count on ads. Plan SEO with a margin of months and don’t expect a quick rescue from it. For more on what happens to ads week by week, see the article “How long to wait for ad results”.

4. What happens if you stop

Turn off ads and the impressions and clicks from them stop. New enquiries from that channel stop too, and you see it within days. Ads are closer to a daily payment for a result.

What you built for SEO (useful pages, a clear site structure, fast loading) does not vanish with the contractor’s last payment. That is why SEO is more like an investment. But “stays” does not mean “grows by itself”: pages age, competitors don’t sleep, and without care your results can slip over time. This is practitioners’ observation, and there is no official figure.

One more trap: “ads are expensive, let’s switch them off and stay on the free channel”. If your free channel is weak or doesn’t exist, the enquiries will simply disappear. First look at how many enquiries really come from each source (more on that below).

5. There are no guarantees

Google’s documentation says it directly: no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, and if a contractor guarantees you first place, find someone else. It also advises caution with SEO firms, web consultants and agencies that email you out of the blue.

There are no guarantees in ads either: enquiries depend on prices, your site, competitors and on whether enquiry tracking is set up correctly. A contractor who promises “3x enquiries in a month” promises something they do not control.

And one more thing from Google: if you run a small local business, you can probably do much of the work yourself. To start with, there is an SEO starter guide in the documentation.

6. How to measure each channel yourself

The most useful thing you can do in five minutes: make sure you have access to both reports. Both are free.

  • Ads: your Google Ads account. It shows cost, clicks, impressions and conversions, that is, enquiries if they are set up. Check separately what exactly counts as an enquiry: the whole arithmetic depends on it.
  • SEO: Search Console, a free Google tool in which a site owner sees how the site appears in search. The Performance report shows impressions, clicks, average position and CTR (the share of impressions that ended in a click). Ads do not enter this report as a position: Google’s help says that ads do not occupy a search position.

Where money gets lost in SEO: the home page and your company name

In our experience, the most common mistake in SEO reports is “traffic grew” thanks to people who were looking for your company by name anyway. They would have come without any SEO. The real effect of SEO shows in queries without your company name, that is, when a stranger found you by the service. In Search Console, in the Performance report, filter out queries containing your company name and compare with the rest. In November 2025 Google added a separate branded queries filter for this, but it does not appear on every site at once; if you don’t have it, use the filter by query text. Also look at the share of visits to the home page: it is often those who already know the name who land there.

What to ask your contractor

Google advises asking directly what kind of results they expect and in what timeframe. Add three more questions:

  • Which indicators exactly do you commit to counting, and where can I see them myself?
  • Can I see queries with my company name and without it separately?
  • What was agreed in writing before work began: goals, deadlines, what we count as success? Practitioners insist that without this, a “where is the result” dispute starts after a couple of months.

Practical takeaway: what to choose

Summary

Ads give speed and control but stop together with the budget. SEO gives a lasting result, but a slow one, without guarantees, and you need to know how to check it. One does not replace the other, and the owner’s question is not “which is better” but “what do I need this month and what in a year”. Remember three things:

  1. ads do not lift your site in the free results; these are two separate channels;
  2. SEO timing: Google says “from hours to months”, practitioners say “3 to 6 months to the first effect”, and neither side offers an honest guarantee;
  3. ask for access to both reports and look at queries without your company name.
